Absolutely any single person who consumes cannabis can easily tell you that if there’s one feeling no one enjoys, it’s the moment when you realize, “I’m too high.”
It could be possible that you were trying to impress your friends by taking in a bigger puff than normal…or maybe the #edibles you ate were more powerful than you thought…perhaps you just tried #concentrates (or cannabis in general) for the first time in your life and was caught off-guard by its potency…or maybe you just have a lower tolerance than you expected when it comes to #cannabis overall.
There are numerous ways it can happen, and once it does, the resulting experience might be frightening and uncomfortable and can potentially turn off even the most seasoned cannabis lovers.
Many, if not most of us, have experienced the unpleasant moments that can come with the overwhelming cannabis effects. Thankfully, there are various ways to help “come back down” when you’re feeling too high, overwhelmed, nervous or even uncomfortable from an excessive consumption of cannabis.
A great idea is to prepare for your smoke session according to your personal tolerance level. If you’re a newbie, try out a small amount and slowly increase it over time as your tolerance builds. Consume with people you know and are comfortable with… also, never feel pressured to consume more than you can handle. Saying no is in fact okay! It’s great to make new friends and to fit into a new crowd, but being surrounded by strangers when you can’t feel your face is unpleasant at best and anxiety-ridden at worst. With that being said, If you are a first time cannabis consumer and you’re ready to try it, we recommend being with someone you trust.
Take it easy (especially when consuming edibles). We recommend trying a standard, maybe even a tad smaller, dose of 10 mg or even 5 mg if you really want to ease into the whole cannabis experience. It’s always a good plan to wait at least an hour, if not two, before increasing your dosage. The same applies for inhalation methods. If you’re only used to occasionally taking one…maybe two hits off your personal #bong, #bowl, or #vaporizer…we don’t advise sitting in a smoking circle puffing and passing for a long period of time.
Once you’ve smoked and you realize something is off, DO NOT PANIC! 😱
If you feel like you may have overdone it, just breathe and remember it’s not permanent and that everything will be A-Okay. Most symptoms of “zoning out” (consuming too much cannabis) will dissipate within several minutes to hours, with no lasting effects beyond a little grogginess. Give it some time and these feelings will eventually pass.
Keep some snacks and water handy. Whether you prefer water or juice, make sure you have a nice, cold beverage on hand (preferably non-caffeinated). Liquids will help you combat “dry mouth” (if you know, you know). Keep in mind that by “hydrate,” we don’t mean alcoholic beverages. If you’re feeling the effects of your cannabis a little too aggressively, stay away from alcohol as it can up the #THC blood concentrations. In other words, you can potentially get even higher with alcohol. Apart from water, people find that snacks can help ease the high and keep them grounded. Some popular snack ideas are: sweets, chips, finger food, light snacks like cheese and nuts, and typically any fast food restaurants like Wendy’s or Mcdonalds. 🍔🍟🍕
This next tip is an interesting one which I personally never tried or seen before. However, many regular smokers claim that black pepper does some sort of magic if you’re feeling higher and more paranoid than normal. If you find yourself in that situation of paranoia, a simple trip to the kitchen, or pantry, will do the trick. Just sniff or chew on a few black peppercorns and it should provide almost instantaneous relief. Boom!
If you are panicking or in a stressed state of mind, find a calm and quiet place to just relax. Most common places to rest and breathe can either be your living room sofa or your bedroom. Sit or lie, it doesn’t matter. Just get comfortable and take deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth. Focus on the sound of your breathing and just rest for a while. Sleeping it off can be the best alternative to stopping a strong high, but it’s not always easy to turn your brain off on command. Once you’ve found a quiet area, lie down and let yourself relax. Should you be unable to fall asleep, just get comfortable until you feel strong enough to spring back up. During that time, read a book or just watch some TV. Here’s another option- while it’s not always accessible if you’re out and about or at a friend’s house, but if you’re at home, try taking a nice shower or bath as a really pleasant option to help you relax.
If you can’t turn your brain off, sometimes a change of scenery and some fresh air to get your blood pumping will help. For example, if you’re in a smoking circle with your friends and you guys are sitting in a closed garage… it might get a little claustrophobic and feelings of anxiety might creep in. Now, if that were the case, a smart idea would be changing up the location to improve your state of mind. A park or even a nice stroll around the neighborhood can be of big help.
Just remember to stay close to your immediate surroundings–we don’t want you wandering off and getting lost while you’re feeling anxious and paranoid! DO refrain from taking a walk if you’re feeling too woozy or light-headed to stand; instead, we recommend going back into the house and laying down for a while.
Keep yourself busy or entertained! Some suggestions include: watching a funny cartoon or movie, listening to some music, playing video games or board games, hanging out with friends, trying out various calming activities like drawing or even coloring books (seriously, adult coloring books are becoming all the rage lately), or simply cuddling up with your significant other for a quiet and relaxing time. Whatever distractions you prefer, make sure it’s a familiar activity that gives you a warm and fuzzy feeling. Your brain will hopefully zone in on the positive feelings and give you a gentle reminder that you are safe and doing just fine.
Lastly, try some #CBD! CBD is an excellent anxiety-fighting compound, and for many people it can be used to counteract too much THC. In the absolute worst case scenario, you can always seek medical attention from a nurse or doctor. This option is always available, even in states where cannabis is illegal. Going to the doctor’s office might sound a little silly for some, but from a medical perspective, physicians have your best interest in mind and want to do all they can to make sure you’re okay, even if it’s helping you come down when you’re too stoned.
